This is the kickoff book in a new series that takes place a few decades afterward the events in the commencement Deltora Quest serial and follows a female protagonist called Britta, who has a passion for trading and wants to be everythin If you sentry my videos, or know me at all, y'all would know that the Deltora Quest series by Emily Rodda is the series that got me into reading when I was 10 years old, so when I heard that Emily Rodda was coming out with a new volume set in the same earth, I was beyond excited!
This is the showtime book in a new serial that takes place a few decades after the events in the outset Deltora Quest series and follows a female protagonist called Britta, who has a passion for trading and wants to be everything her father used to be before he betrayed everyone and left Britta and her family in forced hiding. She at present has a chance to redeem herself and become an amateur who would eventually take control of the Rosalyn armada and the famous ship, the Star of Deltora. But first, she has to get 1 of three finalists in a contest set past the old commander, and then, if she can do that, set sheet and undergo various tests and challenges!
I may be biased, but this definitely isn't as epic as Deltora Quest. The scale of the protagonists run a risk just doesn't compare to Lief's in DQ, as he had the entire globe of Deltora'due south fate resting on him succeeding in his quest, whereas this book focuses on a minor scale contest that purely benefits Britta and not the whole world. I understand that every bit the series goes on, this may change and the scale of her adventures may increase, but it merely didn't seem as huge and ballsy every bit DQ.
It was a potent first though and I can see that this volume was only a build up which will undoubtedly be something great because Emily Rodda is a fantastic storyteller. I call back younger readers will thoroughly enjoy how activeness-packed the story is and how audacious Britta is as a principal character.
I definitely call up that the story shows hope and I would highly recommend reading all three of the Deltora Quest serial' and so picking up this one! Information technology's definitely a new middle course series to look out for! It hits stores on the 1st of Baronial in Australia! ...more
You take such a storytellers talent! I go drawn into your plots and enchanted by your heroes. Britta is another i in the vein of Lief or Rowan (I don't mean so like as to exist boring not at all). She is brave, capable (possibly more upfront virtually being brave and capable than either of the others), difficult working, wary (with reason) of others and has an air of tragedy.

Oh Emily Rodda! You lot have such a storytellers talent! I go drawn into your plots and enchanted by your heroes. Britta is another 1 in the vein of Lief or Rowan (I don't mean and so like as to be boring not at all). She is brave, capable (peradventure more than upfront about being brave and capable than either of the others), hard working, wary (with reason) of others and has an air of tragedy.
When Britta begins by driving up the price of a cheese by how she packages and advertises (verbally) I was a bit turned off. The whole thought of a dynasty of traders with the adjacent ones chosen by contest didn;t seem like this was going to be like this. Merely this is an author I have always liked and I was curious so I read on. Only as well because the whole idea of meritocracy is soon problematised and questions of class and race come in...sure it's still a feel good children'south book just under the simplifications lie some very existent questions and they are treated with inventiveness and middle but not buried.
I loved something that happens betwixt the sisters toward the end of the book. I even shed a tear (this is becoming a habit). I predicted some of the plot twists but so I accept been reading Rodda for years (and rereading aloud to five children and listening to CDs) and so I guess I have get familiar with her way.
Fifty-fifty seeing the twists coming I wanted to run across how they unfolded and I was enchanted with the ideas. I am hoping there will be further troubling of the idea of competition and rivalry in the remaining books...either style yes I am hooked I will read the whole series including the sequels she may not yet know she volition write (lol)
Oh and it more than passes the Bechdel examination! iv 1/2 stars
Suitable for primary school children and anyone with a heart...safe enough to read aloud to minor people.
...moreFor Deltora nerds like me, there is likewise a whole heap of picayune references to choice out (at that place are probably too references to the Iii Doors, though I oasis't read this serial). And to be honest, it is simply nice to be in that earth once again, 25-ish years afterward the Shadow Lord has gone. The land is healing (schools! They accept schools!), but all the same scarred- the land did not quite get the fairytale ending Deltora Quest left us with, and that was interesting to see.
As much as I keen for Britta to sail off and accept wonderful adventures in the nine seas, I sorely hope she returns to Del and so she tin meet a certain king and queen...
...moreIt was great to have a strong female protagonist and explore the world in the aftermath of the Shadowlord'due south reign. I'chiliad so happy to be back in the state of Deltora, and I'thou excited to run across where this story goes!

The nostalgia striking hard in this ane. It's amazing to be back in this world!!! I spent most of my childhood reading the Deltora Quest books, so reading this volume felt like I was finally coming home.
I tin can't look to encounter what Emily Rodda has in store for us in the next volume! And I actually desire a cameo of some of the characters from her other series to appear!
Overall I loved it and I can't wait to see what the rest of the adventure holds.

Emily Rodda has wrote fantastic fantasy books for years. Her imagination is second to none. She has created this world over many years (i remember reading her books 15 years ago) It's easy to read from a world I and so many others already dear. Likewise love supporting a great Australian author.

The Star of Deltora is the story of Britt, a young adult female who dreams of sailing the seas and being a trader like her father was. Her father got greedy though and ran off and disgraced the family. Now Britt and her mother and sis are hiding the identity of who they really are so nobody volition connect the dots and know that they are Dare Larsett's family. Britt wins a identify in a contest that gives her the take chances to sail away, trade appurtenances and become the possessor of the fleet that has The Star of Deltora as one of the ships. The Star of Deltora was her father's send and she wants to win information technology back and make a proper name for herself.
Book 1 The Shadows of the Master gets her a spot on the ship and they ready sail to the starting time of the 3 islands they are going to visit and trade with. I finished this volume in 1 day and started immediately on the second in the series of four. ...more than
I absolutely loved the magical elements in this book! I also appreciated that the finish resolved Britta's internal disharmonize about her cloak-and-dagger identity simply leaves some suspense as everyone on the gunkhole doesn't know her true identity as Larsett's daughter. I'm looking forward to reading the adjacent book in the series to see where Britta's adventures take her! I would recommend this to children/adolescents who savour fantasy, magic, and adventure.
...moreHow does this writer keep producing masterpieces after so many years? I don't know just she does! I would even daresay that this is the all-time series yet!
If y'all haven't read any Emily Rodda you lot should probably read: Deltora series 1, 2 and 3; so maybe Three doors series; and maybe Rowan of Rin (if yous're going to read all these I recommend reading Rowan of Rin showtime, though there'southward no overlap between it and the other 2). If you lot're looking at
This book is great! The series equally a whole is amazing! How does this writer go along producing masterpieces afterwards then many years? I don't know but she does! I would even daresay that this is the best serial yet!
If you haven't read any Emily Rodda you lot should probably read: Deltora series one, 2 and three; then perhaps Three doors series; and peradventure Rowan of Rin (if yous're going to read all these I recommend reading Rowan of Rin beginning, though at that place's no overlap between it and the other 2). If you're looking at this book for a child, and so certainly kickoff with Rowan - it is for a younger audience (only nevertheless enjoyable for adults). Notwithstanding, there are only a tiny reference to Rowan of Rin and some small references to Delora series 1 so yous can easily read this series without reading the others commencement.
If you've read the Deltora serial, and liked it, then you'll love this 1 serial too!
I don't call up information technology's a spolier to tell you that there are ships and boats featured in the serial - information technology helps to know what the stern and the bow of the ship/boat are before you lot start reading.

I notice information technology starts a piffling slow, unfortunately. But I do like Britta, even though I have some...concerns, we'll say, about where her character arc will lead. I regularly find Rodda's books take until about volume 2 or 3 in the series to really get going, and then we'll see where these get!I have my Suspicions well-nigh how things are going to turn out, given Rodda's fashion of writing and last-minute surprises, but we'll see if I'grand right in the end. Calling it now: (view spoiler)[I'm willing to bet that the Rex of Tier isn't actually Dare Larsett. Probably it'due south the other guy, the Mikah dude. As shortly as they said it was only a skeleton left on the boat, I got suspicious. (hide spoiler)]
Either way, I generally similar Britta, I actually like Gem, and this looks like a fun girl-ability sort of romp, and so I'm ready for Book 2!
Non calling information technology because I doubt it's gonna happen for me, just I'thousand just saying: iv teen girls on a boat together for months is an excellent setup for sailor lesbians. Rodda, please take note of this for future books.

I keep looking at this book and thinking that I need to read information technology. And so getting distracted past something else. Because, well, I'one thousand a goldfish. Just I finally picked this up. And then promptly read information technology page to page before putting it back down. I didn't even need a bookmark to have a pause halfway through.Shadows of the Chief might return to my dearest earth of Deltora, just information technology is into an entirely different world that you are thrown. Actually, I'thou withal trying to effigy out when within Lief'due south reign this story takes place. At that place is a mention of Barda, and then I'thou certain it'southward when they are withal alive… I love that this is a storyline that takes place in a world that is already familiar, but its own subset location that I've had almost no feel with. Plus, the idea of traders and pirates and the seven seas is incredibly thrilling. This tale may not include much of that yet, just information technology does set everything up perfectly for the side by side three books, and a swashbuckling set of tales.
...moreWhile it wasn't a task to read this volume, I really enjoy Emily Rodda'due south writing style, the book vicious a fiddling apartment to me. This feels similar a very long prologue, something akin to the first half of The Forests of Silence. However, even after a long prologue, the story doesn't feel every bit exciting equally it supposed to be. There are no high stakes, it'due south no 'saving the globe' every bit it was in The Forests of Silence, or saving their home every bit in Rowan of Rin and The Golden Door. It's about Britta's jour
3.5/5 starsWhile information technology wasn't a chore to read this book, I actually enjoy Emily Rodda's writing way, the volume barbarous a piffling flat to me. This feels like a very long prologue, something akin to the kickoff half of The Forests of Silence. However, even after a long prologue, the story doesn't feel as heady every bit it supposed to exist. There are no loftier stakes, it's no 'saving the globe' every bit it was in The Forests of Silence, or saving their home as in Rowan of Rin and The Golden Door. It's about Britta's journey to, likely, become a trader and claim the transport that once belonged to her traitor father. The main issue is that I haven't really latched onto Britta yet, or any of the characters to be honest. I besides don't get that the author introduced a possible love interest, but it's unlikely we encounter him again until the last book. I think that character might also have been female person, which immediately fixes the 'I am not similar other girls' experience and the love-involvement effect.
...moreThis is the first volume in a middle course fantasy story. i think it was marketed as YA, merely it felt more center course. Britta'southward father did some things and left the family unit with a terrible reputation in Del which had them go into hiding. It was well written and rather intriguing. The things that kept repeating are the ones that really held it back. Similar it only
three.v stars. This is the starting time book in a middle grade fantasy story. i recollect it was marketed as YA, simply information technology felt more center grade. Britta's begetter did some things and left the family with a terrible reputation in Del which had them go into hiding. Until there's an opportunity to be a trader's apprentice which is Britta's dream. So she goes through some trials to be chosen.
It was well written and rather intriguing. The things that kept repeating are the ones that really held information technology dorsum. Like it just took besides long to become going, there was a lot of references to previous Deltora series that were rather frequent and not super necessary, and Britta'south repetition over worrying on people discovering her hush-hush...information technology didn't demand frequent reminders. We got it the commencement few times.
Overall though, I would like to read the next book and find out where the adventure goes.
...moreAnyhow, I notwithstanding love the fact that nosotros get more than of deltora's world. you don't accept to rea distressing to say I had to give this book 3 stars. :/ not because deltora was disappointing or because it was the perspective of a new grapheme. I think it was because it wasn't as witty and adventurous like all of rodda'southward other books. I felt like it didn't get to know many of the characters well and I think information technology could have gone into a little more detail why her fathers reputation would bear upon her family and then harshly.
Anyway, I still love the fact that nosotros go more of deltora'southward world. you lot don't have to read deltora quest to really know what's going on so anyone can pick it up and read information technology. the best part is in the authors commentary in the back where information technology explains that several of her series all exist within the aforementioned globe! Emily rodda is my favorite :) ...more
I'k glad I gave it a go. Evidently, the story is non the aforementioned, and it appears that the stakes are not equally high (and
I finished reading the last of Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest books early on terminal twelvemonth. And I was then upset, since it was 1 of the best volume serial I'd read in years, and it was over. I'd heard about the Star of Deltora serial around that time, but resisted reading them, since despite being set in the same globe and timeline, it followed different characters and took place decades subsequently.I'grand glad I gave information technology a go. Obviously, the story is not the same, and it appears that the stakes are not as high (and I don't particularly intendance for Britta), but I like the other characters, and can already smell the adventure on the air current. There'south a great scene after in the book that'southward pure Emily, and after that, I was irrevocably committed to the story.
I wait forward to seeing what comes next!

I finished this book and immediately ordered the second in the series. Information technology is not for developed readers looking to get lost in a different world just immature adults will bask the story and characters. The writer'due south descriptions are astonishing. The reader feels like they can taste, see, touch on, hear and smell all the happenings in this volume.
